Before ordering a website, almost everyone asks the same question: should we put it together quickly on a website builder (Tilda, Wix, Shopify) or pay for custom development? The right answer depends less on which is "better" and more on what the website has to do for your business over the next two or three years.
Builder vs custom: the difference
A website builder is a ready-made platform where the site is assembled from blocks. You pay a monthly subscription, hosting and updates are the platform's job, but the site belongs to the platform: you cannot move it to your own server.
A custom website is programmed for your needs, on Laravel, WordPress or another stack. The code and the data are yours, the site can grow in any direction and connect to any other software.
When a builder is enough
- You need a one-page landing page for an ad campaign or an event.
- You are testing a business idea and don't know yet whether it will work.
- The site is informational: a few pages, contacts, an enquiry form.
- The budget is tight and you need the site this week.
In these cases a builder is an honest, fast solution. Just remember the subscription is paid every year, and over three or four years it can add up to the price of a simple custom site.
When you need custom development
- A trilingual site. Armenian, Russian and English versions with proper hreflang and separate URLs are often limited on builders.
- Local payments. Idram, ArCa and Telcell integrations are usually missing on builders or need workarounds.
- Connections to other systems. CRM, accounting, inventory, Telegram notifications.
- Non-standard logic. A price calculator, customer accounts, bookings, a catalogue with thousands of products.
- SEO as your main channel. Speed, clean code and structure are fully under your control.
Side-by-side comparison
| Website builder | Custom website | |
|---|---|---|
| Time to launch | A few days | 2–8 weeks |
| Upfront cost | Low | Higher |
| Monthly cost | Subscription, forever | Hosting and maintenance only |
| Ownership | The platform's | Yours |
| Integrations | Within the platform | Anything |
| SEO and speed | Adequate | Full control |
The hidden costs nobody mentions
On a builder, every extra feature is a paid plan or an app: multiple languages, an online store, form integrations. And when the business outgrows the platform, the site has to be rebuilt from scratch. With a custom website most of the cost comes up front, and after that the site grows with your business.
Decide with three questions
- Does the site need to connect to other software or local payment systems?
- Do your customers look for you on Google, and are you ready to invest in SEO?
- Do you need the site for a year, or as a long-term business tool?
If the answer to at least two is "yes", custom development will pay off. For budgets, read how much a website costs in Armenia; for WordPress as a middle ground, see WordPress development. You can get a starting estimate for your project with the calculator on the home page.
